POST ELECTION VIOLENCE IN KENYA

On 30th December 2007, after three days of waiting and accusations of irregularities in vote-counting, President Kibaki claimed victory in Kenya’s Presidential election - a result rejected by opposition leader, Raila Odinga, and questioned by international observers.

In the weeks to follow, post election violence tore through the country, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving over 300,000 displaced.

The disputed election results unleashed unresolved land and wealth distribution tensions, which, tribally based, erupted into widespread ethnic violence which shattered the reputation of a country previously viewed as one of Africa's most stable democracies. Kenya's economy came to a standstill, tourists stayed away crippling the $800 million a year industry, and above all Kenyan citizens witnessed horrors which no human should ever have to experience.
